President Tarja Halonen today 25.11.2002 granted the honorary title of Counsellor of Music and Entertainment (Hon.) to entertainment artist Ilkka Lipsanen, Danny.

Around the time of the 100th anniversary of the LP-record, Solo ry (The organisation of recording and performing artists, vocalists and conductors) , decided to present the honorary title to Ilkka ‘Danny’ Lipsanen. The title of Counsellor of Music and Entertainment (Hon.) was now granted for the first time to a performing artist.

The first person to sign the appeal was Honorary Chairman Ragni Malmstén, now deceased. The application was warmly supported by the following persons: Professor Risto Tuominen, Docent Harri Vento, Professor Esa Saarinen, Chief Executive Kirsti Paakkanen, Principal Orchestral Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, Formula 1 star Mika Häkkinen, Chief Executive Risto Parjanne, Counsellor of Social Politics Veikko Hursti, Spokeswoman of the Finnish Parliament Riitta Uosukainen, UN Ambassador Elisabeth Rehn, Councillor of Mining Martin Saarikangas and General Gustav Hägglund.

Danny’s career has been exceptional by the Finnish standard and his merits are undeniable. His career started in 1963, the premier recording ‘East Virginia’ was released 16.3.1964 and immediately became a hit. Danny has so far had 87 chart singles of which 11 reached number one. On November 1966 he had 9 songs simultaneously in the Suosikki Top 100 chart and the song ‘Tuulensuojaan’ stayed in the charts for 126 weeks during 1970-72, which is longer than any other Finnish recording. Danny has released more than 300 songs and his successful recording career continues.

The show concept that Danny created was something completely new in Finland. The first show, the Timantinkova Danny show, came out in 1966, and since then he has brought more than 40 amazing show spectacles to the stage, the total amount of viewers reaching nearly 4 million.

His career in entertainment continues and the D-caravan is on the road again. The current celebration tour has been an immense success: all the concert halls have been soldout beforehand. In December the tour will go onboard, with Danny’s Glory of Christmas –show.

In addition to his own career, Danny has influenced the careers of several other Finnish entertainment artists. For many, a performance in Danny’s productions served as a springboard for their own successful careers. Danny’s shows have included artists such as Anki Lindqvist, Eero Raittinen, Irina Milan, Katri-Helena, Pepe Willberg, Arto Nuotio, Kirka Babitzin, Muska Babitzin, Ykä Babitzin, Anna Babitzin, Kisu, Päivi Paunu, Kari Tapio, Tapani Kansa, Ami Aspelund, Virve Rosti, Armi Aavikko, Topi Sorsakoski etc. Of the recent performers, to mention but a few: Mira Sunnari, Susanna Heikki, Johanna Pakonen, Sari Konttinen, Marco Äijälä, Mika Rinttilä and the vocalist groups the I´Dees and the D´Voices.

Danny has also worked successfully for the benefit of the entire entertainment industry:
1974 -1980 Employer organisation of artists’ management agencies, Vice-chairman
1989 - Gramex ry, Member of the Board
1991 - Solo ry, Chairman
The impact of Danny’s activities will be seen in the Finnish entertainment world for decades to come.

Danny is the first entertainment artist to be granted the honorary title of Counsellor of Music and Entertainment (Hon.). Earlier this title has been awarded for example to composers Ossi Rinne and Rauno Lehtinen.

- This title will most probably start a new kind of tradition, says Danny.

The procedure abroad

The honorary title, Counsellor of Music and Entertainment (Hon.), also has international significance, for example in China, which Danny will visit again in the future.

The Beatles producer George Martin was also knighted. Corresponding titles have been awarded in Canada to Bryan Adams, Céline Dion and k.d. lang. France has given recognition to the following entertainment artists: Sylvie Vartan, Johnny Hallyday, Charles Aznavour, Nana Mouskouri and Mireille Mathieu. In The United States, in addition to the lifework prizes awarded in the sector itself, some entertainers have been granted an Honorary Doctorate. This title has been awarded for example to Jon Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Sting, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. (In the United Kingdom titles etc. are granted by the Queen, in Canada by the local supreme representative of the Queen, the Governor General, and in France by the President.
